People want to be heard and their ideas, accepted. To prevent constructive dissention from slipping into the morass of conflict, deflect it in another direction. Simply remind the combatants of the true purpose of the meeting, and how it will further the ultimate cause and reason everyone is working here. Then ask, “Are you still on board with that?” This simple question has a monumental effect. It goes to the very heart of the person’s belief system and why they joined the organization in the first place.
