Let’s say you have sat patiently by while a team member outlines her strategy. You don’t interrupt and you sit up straight and pay attention. Such body language says that you are interested in hearing what she has to say. Still, you know that your ideas will work far better. Now what? Find the common ground. Let them save face.
Here’s how. Say, “I understand why you think A, B and C. Frankly, I’m glad you brought it up. I’m worried about them too. I can see our goals are aligned perfectly. You’ve opened my eyes to something different here. Even though my strategy is a little different from yours, we both finish in the same place.
