Leaders and Emotional Intelligence

The ability to identify, assess, and control your own emotions and those of others and groups, is a necessary skill for Leaders who must lead under adverse conditions. Emotional intelligence (EQ) requires the Leader to control their feelings and emotions when under fire. This doesn’t mean just showing an outward appearance of calm while your stomach is doing back flips. Instead, you must harness your emotions and channel them to create a constructive solution.

People can see through a Leader who is bravely trying to keep a stiff upper lip. Soon that lip will quiver. When it does, people’s trust and confidence will deteriorate quickly. Use your powers of emotional intelligence to relate to your constituency. Your job while under fire is to inspire those around you to find and implement a solution.
