Harnessing EQ means that you work to rekindle people’s passion and enthusiasm for the overall cause, purpose and Why. Keep them committed and motivated. Adversity creates a fertile atmosphere for intense bonding. It’s true that the deepest friendships are those forged in battle. Why? Because everyone is suffering equally, working for a common cause, and against a common enemy. These are strong motivators. It is part of the success of the company, Outward Bound. There, they deliberately put participants in risky and adverse situations that force them to rely on one another.

A Leader with a highly developed sense of emotional intelligence—their own, as well as the group’s—can utilize adversity to accelerate change beyond what it would have been under more normal circumstances.
