Managing The Meaning Of An Issue

The Leader has the power to set the meaning of a dynamic incident or a fluid situation or just a plain crisis. Call it whatever you wish—it’s a problem. The leader has the ability to put the issue in perspective. Certainly, people will begin doing that for themselves. However, only the Leader has the global reach and vision to put it in its overall perspective. The Leader’s interpretation of the crisis resonates and filters throughout the organization.

Of course, the Leader’s interpretation must stand up to scrutiny. It cannot be viewed as uninformed or naïve. It is the Leader’s correct interpretation of the problem that gives people the courage to prevail when things don’t go their way. That interpretation must be consistent with the organization’s cause, purpose and Why.
