“Not only are bloggers suckers for the remarkable, so are the people who read blogs.” - Seth Godin
BOOSTER BYTE 39
For publicly held companies, transparency in every aspect of the business is a fact of life. Anything less than complete candor can earn you a jail sentence. As in the case of Martha Stewart’s story, an initial mistake is often survivable. But when combined with an ensuing cover-up, the public and the legal system have little capacity to forgive.
The media especially can sniff out any attempt at concealment. Suddenly, what began as just a humdrum business story becomes a quest for the truth. This is the stuff of which Pulitzer prizes are made. The reporter who first discovered it is no longer just doing her job. Instead, she is making a name for herself and possibly becoming world-famous. Her parents will be so proud.
LEADER’s must not only be truthful in fact, they must appear as truthful to a public that is skeptical and expert at ferreting out dishonesty. LEADER’s who are themselves authentic and live for their cause and purpose have a definite advantage. Their commitment comes through in everything they do and say.
How you react in public to the tough questions and what decisions you make involving the public also speaks volumes about your transparency.
